In 2000, I implemented an art studio at the renal transplant in-patient unit of the Hospital do Rim and Hipertensão (HRH), Oswaldo Ramos Foundation, Federal University of São Paulo / Escola Paulista de Medicina.
The premise that underpinned the work developed at the art studio is that any human being, wherever they may be, has a basic instinct to create images that represent themselves, their world, and their individual and collective psyche.
Although it is not always possible to identify the meanings of these images, we can perceive their feelings, and intuit a search for meaning, an experience of transcendence and a need to share the experiences of life. When looking at the artistic manifestations throughout time, we comprehend that art is for humans a means of understanding themselves and their place in the world.

This project operated from August 2000 to July 2006.* During this time, at the renal transplant unit (59 beds) eighty percent of care was offered to patients through the Public Brazilian Unified Health System, which mostly served patients from the lower economic class. The inpatients, children and adults, suffered from chronic renal failure.
The studio was open every day, all day long, to all patients with materials always at their disposal. Large glass windows filled the room with natural light. Patients were free to come and go as they pleased. Over time, the art studio became an exhibition space; it became a colorful room of patient art.
Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 12 pm, I stayed in this art studio. It was up to me to encourage the patient's creative expression, providing him or her with a welcoming environment and technical guidance to stimulate and facilitate his or her work.
Some days of the week we took the children to play in an open and sunny area on the top floor of the hospital. Art supplies were also provided for patients to work in their bedrooms.
The art studio was part of a project called Arts, Play and Therapy at the HRH, which provided the patients with artistic and relaxation activities, an art studio, a playing space, and psychotherapeutic care. This project was idealized by me, and was based on the work of Dra. Nise da Silveira and the educationalist Maria Amélia Pereira (Péu).

Em 2000, implementei uma oficina de artes na enfermaria de transplante renal do Hospital do Rim e Hipertensão (HRH) da Fundação Oswaldo Ramos, Universidade Federal de São Paulo/ Escola Paulista de Medicina.
A premissa do trabalho desenvolvido na oficina de artes é a de que qualquer ser humano, seja onde for, tem o instinto básico de criar imagens que representem a si próprio e seu mundo, sua psique individual e coletiva.
Embora nem sempre seja possível identificar os significados dessas imagens, podemos sentir seus sentimentos, e intuir uma busca por sentido, uma experiência de transcendência e uma necessidade de comungar os afetos e experiências da vida. Ao se olhar para as manifestações artísticas de todos os tempos, entendemos que a arte é para o homem um meio de compreensão de si próprio e de seu lugar no mundo.

A oficina de artes funcionou de agosto de 2000 a julho de 2006.* Nesse período, a enfermaria de transplante renal tinha 59 leitos divididos entre dois andares do hospital, sendo 80% de seus pacientes atendidos pelo SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde). Os pacientes internados, crianças e adultos, sofriam de insuficiência renal crônica.
O espaço da oficina ficava sempre aberto. Na sala havia quatro mesas-bancadas onde ficavam expostas as esculturas, e uma parede onde ficavam expostos os desenhos e as pinturas. De dia, a sala era naturalmente iluminada por suas grandes janelas de vidro. Os pacientes tinham a liberdade de entrar e sair ao seu bem querer. Havia pacientes que frequentavam o espaço a qualquer hora do dia ou da noite. Os familiares e amigos dos pacientes também iam à oficina.
De segunda à sexta-feira, das 9h00 às 12h00, eu permanecia na oficina. Cabia a mim incentivar a expressão criativa do paciente, fornecendo-lhe um ambiente acolhedor e orientações técnicas para estimular e facilitar seu trabalho.
Com o passar do tempo a oficina tornou-se também um espaço expositivo. Era comum que a equipe de saúde, os funcionários do hospital, os pacientes e seus familiares e amigos visitassem a oficina para verem os trabalhos expostos.
Alguns dias da semana levávamos as crianças para brincarem em um pequena área aberta e ensolarada no último andar do hospital. Os pacientes também podiam levar materiais artísticos para trabalharem em seus leitos.
Esta mesma oficina foi parte de um projeto denominado Arte, Brincadeira e Terapia no HRH, que oferecia aos pacientes atividades artísticas, brincadeiras, relaxamento e atendimento psicoterapêutico. Este projeto foi idealizado por mim, a partir do trabalho da Dra. Nise da Silveira e da educara Maria Amélia Pereira, a Péu.
